Co-op Blog Post – February 2014

Feb. 28, 2014

We had an extremely bright group of six co-op students from various post-secondary programs join us in January 2014 for an 8 month work term, bringing the total co-op headcount to 13 onboard. One out of every eight staff members at Appnovation is a student. What an impact fresh minds can make towards the success of a growing organization like ours!

A little bit about Appnovation’s latest co-op cohort:

Amber Chow, Talent Management Coordinator Co-op

Program: UBC Sauder School of Business Program

Amber has a wide breadth of co-op experience.  She worked in recruitment at SNC-Lavalin Inc., supporting the hiring and onboarding for employees for the Evergreen Rapid Transit Line. Amber organized a two-week long nationwide employee orientation event while she was part of Imperial Oil’s team in Calgary as their Corporate Orientation Coordinator. She loves traveling and discovering new cultures (last year Amber went to Australia, New Zealand, and Japan), dancing, and eating Asian cuisine.

Andy Mao, Sales & Marketing Co-op

Program: UBC Sauder School of Business Program

Andy juggled two internships at once, working with Klutch Apparel as a Marketing & Sales Co-op, in addition to providing Marketing and Business Development support for a Vancouver start-up called Connect the Doc. With over 7 years of leadership experience, he enjoys working with people and is currently involved in the largest National Marketing Competition as the Western Regional Manager. Fun fact: Andy earned his Pilots License at the age of 17.

Ian Clelland, IT Support Technician Co-op

Program: UBC Engineering Program

Ian previously worked for Environment Canada as an IT Co-op in the Atmospheric Monitoring Division, which involved installing automatic weather stations, connected to Environment Canada’s data collection services. Ian enjoys programming in python and he even started a website that tracks BC and Yukon weather stations. Outside of work and school, Ian likes to travel the world! Some of his adventures include trips to the USA, Mexico, Britain, France, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Italy and Vatican City.

Justin Crosby, Software QA Engineer Co-op

Program: SFU Computing Science Program

Justin joins us with previous QA testing experience gained from working at Bit Stew, where he was responsible for debugging smart meter software. During his free time Justin enjoys playing the piano, with 10 years of musical talent to back him up. When he is not immersed in his music, you might find Justin gaming or heading to the Sunshine Coast to go mountain biking with his dog.

Paolo Montano, Software Developer Co-op

Program: BCIT Computer Systems Technology Program

Paolo’s interest in computer programming and design started flourishing when he attended SFU, subsequently taking a break to pursue his passion for photography. He combined his passion for computer programming and photography while working at Art Department Studios/Hera Films as a Web Developer and Film Maker. Fun fact: Paolo used to bowl competitively at the provincial level.

Caleb Ng, Software QA Engineer Co-op

Program: UBC Engineering Program

Through Caleb’s schoolwork and previous employment at McKesson Enterprise Medical Imaging, he gas gained experience writing and debugging programs and test scripts. Caleb has a passion for listening to various types of music – primarily instrumental or a cappella (don’t be surprised if you find him singing along to his music while at work!) Some of his favorite bands/artists include Peter Hollens, Pentatonix and Clara C.
