1) Who are you?
My name is Scott Bell and I've always been told it has a nice ring to it. I often make jokes that only I find funny, but when somebody else gets them it's pure magic (see previous sentence). I was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. In 2002 I made my way west to Vancouver with a stop in Kelowna for a year. I grew up playing competitive Tennis and Volleyball and experienced great success at the national level and cultivated many lifelong friendships along the way. Being in leadership roles on the sports teams that I played on has given me a strong set of values that I always strive to carry forward into my work and personal life.
2) What is your role at Appnovation and what does it entail? What does a typical day in the office look like for you?
My official title at Appnovation is Senior Creative Lead but I wear many different hats. I am a full brained individual - in that I am both left & right brained. I am equally as passionate about being creative as I am about being technical. On a typical project I am involved from conception to completion. I enjoy interacting with clients, understanding their business goals, providing fresh ideas and a clear vision, and working with our talented teams to ensure that that vision gets executed to the highest standards. Along the way, I provide deliverables such as wireframes, information architecture documents, design comps, and implementation (front end development & Drupal theming).
3) Where are you located? Where do you hail from originally?
My homebase is currently in Vancouver, BC but over the past year I have been bi-coastal, spending almost as much time in New York City as in Vancouver.
4) When did you join Appnovation?
I joined Appnovation in May of 2008 (6 years ago). It was a very small company when I started (6 people) and I remember my interview in a tiny and packed room no bigger than a college dorm room where I sat in the middle and had my interview with Arnold while everyone else pretended not to listen. It's amazing to see how much we have grown since then!
5) Why do you do what you do? Why did you decide to join Appnovation?
I do what I do because it is what I am passionate about. I've had a fascination with computers from a very young age and have always done web design as a hobby since the early days of the internet. It's interesting to think that I am from a generation where there is a clear line between pre-internet and post-internet worlds. From the second I "got online" as a kid I was fascinated with this new world and began learning how to design and build websites. I continued to do so as a hobby for many years until I decided turned 'pro' in 2007. Now, I have had the privilege of working with amazing clients like Time Inc., Cisco, NYC Department of Transportation, the NBA, and many other exciting projects along the way.
