Rena Yung
Director, Technology Enabled Services

What's your favourite thing about Appnovation?
My favourite aspects of Appnovation are definitely our collaboration, teamwork, and global openness.

What's your story/professional background?
I have 20+ years in project management, all of which has been in the technology space. I have also worked in both large corporations and small start-up environments in both services and product development.

What do you bring to the table?
My "get stuff done," or #GSD attitude and delivery. I approach this through balancing it out with my ability to build strong, loyal relationships with the team members. Also, my cemented reputation as the "Vancouver Work Mom," amongst many TES members.

What do you do (in/out of work) to excel in your role?
I approach work somewhat like positive parenting. There can be many comparisons (building a positive company environment can be compared to building a positive family/home environment). In summary, I always make sure I listen to others, I treat others fairly, and always try to see people's point of view so I can see their motivations and where they're coming from. I feel that this creates empathy and strengthens bonds/relationships... and happier people result in a more successful company (or family).

What do you enjoy outside of work?
You can definitely find me outside, active around Vancouver (I have a dog who needs to be walked every day). You also find me spending quality time with my children and family, cooking and regularly trying new culinary experiments. I also love attending live music concerts, movies, and Netflix!

Do you belong to any boards/sponsor any charities, etc? If so, where?
Last year I was a volunteer mentor for the international Technovation program at Appnovation and my team of high school girls placed in the semi-finals for building a mobile app that had a social awareness theme at Simon Fraser University. I enjoyed it immensely and have signed up to be a volunteer mentor again with them.

What do you do (in/out of work) to excel in your role?
I put a lot of effort in training and mentoring my team at work. I believe in team work but effective teamwork will only happen if we equip our team members with the right knowledge and tools. I also emphasize building friendship with my team at a personal level outside of work. To me, my team is not just people that I work with... they are my dearest friends as well.

What's your favourite thing about Appnovation?
Hands down... our people.

What's your story/professional background?
I followed sales early on in my career through the guidance of strong mentors that opened some great opportunities for me. I have worked for a handful of start-ups early on which really paved the way for my success as they have allowed me to wear many different hats, which helped understand the unique drivers for a company to scale fast and responsibly. What do you do (in/out of work) to excel in your role?
Listen, understand, adapt and execute! In a company as open as Appnovation, ears must always remain on and open. Appnovation serves such a fast and high demand market that complacency will take you no where. After 12+ years in the field, I have created some great relationships in my network, and I am continually discussing wwith my peers what works in their business, what doesn't, and how that could be impactful positively to my position and company.

What do you enjoy outside of work?
I enjoy many facets of life; the beach, boats and the ocean. I'm a big adrenaline junky; big mountain skiing, downhill mountain biking, and motorsports. I love to modify and customize my bikes and cars to make them my own and truly one of a kind.

Do you belong to any boards/sponsor any charities, etc? If so, where?
I donate regularly to the American Cancer Society.

Andrew Dunbar
General Manager & Vice President, Europe
Stuart Massey
Director, Technology Enabled Services

What's your favourite thing about Appnovation?
Life at Appnovation is never dull. Where did that time go?!

What's your story/professional background?
I spent over 20 years as a GIS specialist in the UK - as a developer, project and delivery team manager. Coming to Vancouver in 2013, I swapped maps for websites and although the pace is a little bit faster, its been a natural fit here at Appnovation. My main area of expertise is project management, in both traditional and agile environments.

What do you bring to the table?
I think I am pretty good at setting up and managing teams, defining new processes, and managing projects at all levels. What's most important is doing these in a way that aligns with business strategy.

What do you do (in/out of work) to excel in your role?
I am always looking at better ways to do things. It's not always about taking the easy option. I think it is very important to maintain professional qualifications and to keep aligned with best practices.

Colin Brown
Operations Director

What's your favourite thing about Appnovation?
I like the chaos of it. It's in such growth mode, things move fast, we make decisions very quickly. Managing the fast pace nature is a lot of fun. We're dealing with not just local but global initiatives, particularly in Operations. You're trying to account for different people, time zones, cultures, etc., and make things work as effective and efficient as possible. It's all very exciting.

What's your story/professional background?
I'm a business builder. I've built a serious of my own companies whether I was the founder or the first employee in. I'm a generalist with a lot of experience across software, IT, pharmaceutical, etc.

What do you bring to the table?
A lot of what I do is long-term planning. I spend a lot of my time right in the details of the leads and day to day making sure everything runs as intended, as well as looking at 5-10 year long projects.

There are two core approaches I have with my team: 1) I treat them as adults. 2) I am transparent with them. I give them the ability to ask/address what they need, I loop them in and letting them know what's going on. I may not have the answer, but I'm not hiding anything. I will always give them honest feedback, offer open communication and total transparency. This is very is important to me.

What do you do (in/out of work) to excel in your role?
On a part time basis, I study for the CFA. I love business and numbers. In fact, I've got a stack of finance textbooks up to my eyeballs right now! Aside from that, I'm constantly playing with new softwares and often found reading news from M&A or private equity point of view. To add, I always try to talk to people within the company. Understanding what's going on in their day and what can help improve processes is important to my team and myself.

What do you enjoy outside of work?
I'm more of a socialite. I definitely enjoy going out, eating, meeting people, and taking boxing classes.

Do you belong to any boards/sponsor any charities, etc? If so, where?
Informally, I advise early stage companies. Give them feedback on how to start their business. I also participate in some non profits.
