Appnovation Supports Virginia Tech's GAP IQ as Agricultural Productivity Growth Hits a 50-Year Low

Developed with Google Public Sector and Appnovation, Virginia Tech's open-access platform brings together six decades of global agricultural data, helping leaders explore which policies and technologies could restart productivity growth.

Appnovation Supports Virginia Tech's GAP IQ as Agricultural Productivity Growth Hits a 50-Year Low

At a Glance

  • The problem: Global agricultural productivity grew 0.63% a year over the past decade, the slowest rate since the 1970s.
  • The platform: GAP IQ™, launched by Virginia Tech on October 2, 2026, gives anyone free access to six decades of agricultural productivity data.
  • Appnovation's role: Product strategy, prototyping, and interface and user experience (UX) design.
  • What's next: Scenario modeling that shows how investments in soil health, irrigation, and research could affect productivity.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, October 7, 2026 - Appnovation (opens in new window), the AI Product Company, supported the Global Agricultural Productivity (GAP) Initiative at Virginia Tech (opens in new window) in building GAP IQ™, a free platform that lets governments, investors, and researchers compare six decades of agricultural productivity data to decide where policy and investment should go.

GAP IQ is an open-access data intelligence platform that shows decision-makers where agricultural productivity is growing and where it is stalling. Virginia Tech launched it on October 2, 2026, with the 2026 GAP Report. Google Public Sector and Appnovation supported the build.

Why does GAP IQ matter?

Farms are producing more, but mostly by using more land, fertilizer, and machinery. Global agricultural total factor productivity (TFP), the ratio of outputs to inputs, grew 0.63% a year over the past decade. Meeting 2050 demand requires 2.10% a year, according to the 2026 GAP Report, "Restarting Growth: The Role of Regenerative Agriculture in Productivity Growth and Profitability" (Virginia Tech GAP Initiative, 2026).

The data to close that gap exists, but it sits in national statistics, farm surveys, and satellite archives that don't connect. GAP IQ puts it in one place.

"Agricultural data has never suffered from scarcity. It has suffered from fragmentation. Our role is to make sure users can seamlessly engage with the underlying data, ask complex questions and uncover intelligence that inspires action."

-Angela Rosales, Global Vice President, Product and Strategy, Appnovation

What happened at launch?

  • Virginia Tech GAP Initiative: Demoed GAP IQ live at the 2026 GAP Report Launch in Alexandria, Virginia. Angela Rosales joined the launch panel for Appnovation.
  • The Nature Conservancy (opens in new window): Became the first organization to fund custom GAP IQ work, a pilot linking agricultural support payments, natural capital, and productivity.

"Appnovation has been a genuine partner in building GAP IQ™, not just a vendor executing a scope of work. Their product strategy team pushed our thinking on what the platform could be, and their design team brought the art of the possible to life in a prototype that shows the agriculture sector a better way to wrangle and interpret data is within reach."

- Jessica Agnew, PhD, Associate Director, CALS Global, and Director, Global Agricultural Productivity Initiative, Virginia Tech

Who is GAP IQ for?

GAP IQ is for governments, development organizations, investors, researchers, and agricultural organizations. Organizations can commission custom analysis from Virginia Tech or sponsor regional projects that add subnational data.
