Appnovator Spotlight: Shawna Barnes

Meet Shawna Barnes, our Director of Delivery, Americas, from Montreal.

1. Who are you? What's your story?

I'm the director of delivery here at Appnovation for the Montreal office. I've been in project management/portfolio management for the last 15+ years and love everything to do with it. I've been within the technology and pharmaceutical space for the last 15-20 years and absolutely adore it, and that's why I thought it would be a perfect match for me and Appnovation.

I'm also a busy mom of 2 boys (9 years and 9 months) that keep me quite busy in the evenings and afternoons, and I spend a lot of time running after them and going with them to different activities.

2. What's your role at Appnovation?

My role involves project management and ensuring that projects are delivered on time, on budget and within scope. I take a very close look at timelines, budgeting, resources, making sure deliverables are sent to clients in a format that they're happy with and making sure that clients are coming back, ensuring we have a holistic view of our account with them and seeing what else we can do for them from an overall care perspective.

3. What's the greatest lesson you've learned in your professional career (or even personal life) that you would like to share with others?

Knowledge is power. I'm a firm believer in always learning something new, getting out there to learn information and not waiting for someone to tell me something. Figuring things out for myself is key, I don't wait for someone to give me information or to tell me to research things, I go out there and do it on my own.

4. What do you do outside of work?

I love everything that's related to art: whether that by exhibits, museums, even fashion shows, things like that, I'm obsessed. I love all things to do with art. I'm from Montreal so it's the perfect city for that- Montreal Museum of Fine Arts I especially love and I've had a season pass for many different years.

5. Where do you hope to take your career at this point/what's next for you in your professional career?

Going with knowledge is power, I'm going to be starting my Executive MBA in the Spring, doing that part time while I continue working, so just continuing to push myself into more experience and leadership skills, specifically how executives successfully lead large organizations and how I can implement that in my current role.

*BONUS* What is one fun/random fact about you that many may not know?

I have interior design and a fashion buyer diplomas, so aside from everything professional, I decided to do something for myself and do these 2 different diplomas. I've also done a couple half marathons for the Montreal Rock 'n' Roll Marathon.
